Everything You Need To Spectrometers And How To Pick The Right One

By: @David_Neeble

Spectrometers have evolved so much in the past few decades than one can imagine now. Earlier, people did consider these devices only as a novelty item. The spectrometers that are available now are quite different and have a lot of additional features that you cannot find in any other equipment.

These days, you can find a mini spectrometer that does the same job as the large ones. But, since they are small, carrying it from one place to another becomes a lot easy. Spectrometers are quite useful as they are quite helpful in research and development.

So many companies are manufacturing spectrometers these days, you need to take the time to research well before picking the right one.

The Main Functions: The primary function of a spectrometer is to take in the light from outside — and then the device will break the light into spectral components. After which, the equipment will digitize the signals into wavelengths and will also allow the readers to analyze the same using the computer.

The light from outside comes into the device through the fiber optic cable via a narrow aperture. It is also known as the entrance slit. The slit helps the light to vignette as it comes inside the spectrometer. This divergent light transfers then to the grating area via a concave mirror.

The spectral components of the light disperse from the grating area to the detector using another concave mirror. A spectrometer with a grating that has a concave holographic grating can do all the three functions described above with ease. It has its own advantages and disadvantages. Pick a spectrometer after doing thorough research.

Now, you must be wondering what the things that you need to check when picking a spectrometer. Many people do not know what aspects they need to check. Here are some tips or guidelines to help you choose the right one with ease.

The Wavelength Range: Now, this is the first thing that you need to check before picking a spectrometer. If you are planning to use a spectrometer to analyze the colors, you should select a spectrometer that can cover the visible spectrum of around 400 to 700 nm. Do not pick anything less than that if you want to do better research.

Check the Resolution: Yes, this is the most critical component that you need to check when picking a spectrometer. You do not want to make any mistakes when it comes to the resolution as it can create a big difference.

If the sharp peaks of the wavelengths are separated by 0.5 nm or more, you may need to pick up spectrometer that provides at least 0.5 nm resolution.

Size of the Equipment: In the market, you can find so many types of spectrometers. You should, however, take the time to check for one that is compact or small if you do not have adequate space in your research center. But, if you have sufficient space at your research lab, plan on picking a big spectrometer. Check all the models that are available in the market to get a gist of it. Understand the features each of them offers before picking one that best works for you.

Cost of the Equipment: You can buy spectrometer for any price that you can afford. The larger ones are quite expensive and will for sure burn your pocket if you do not have enough money.

But, if you pick a small one, you do not have to spend so much money. The smaller ones are quite affordable than bigger ones. If you have less money, this is the thing that you should plan on doing until you can afford the bigger ones.

You should also note that smaller spectrometers do not have so many features as the bigger ones. It is the reason why you should take the time to understand the requirement of yours before picking a spectrometer from the market.

Brand of the Device: Now, this is the first thing that you should be doing when planning to buy a large or mini spectrometer. Speak with your colleagues and peers to learn about all the different brands that are available in the market.

Learn about the advantages and disadvantages of picking a product from a specific brand before you take things further. If possible, check online to see if there are reviews available online. If yes, take the time to read through them to see what people that are using feel about them.

Apart from these elements, you should also check on the following aspects:

• Dynamic Range

• Linearity

• Robustness

• Thermal Stability

• Signal to Noise Ration

• Sensitiveness

You need to check all of these aspects before picking a spectrometer. Never skip any of these steps if you want to select the right device.
