All That You Wanted To Know About Turkish Towels

By: @robertjohnson

I have always liked my towels white and fluffy. However, over time, these towels become rough and scratchy. A friend recently suggested buying Turkish towels – they stay soft and comfortable for a very long time, she claimed. I bought a set of Loopys Turkish towels online to check if what she said was true. And I’m glad I switched! These towels are very soft and last for a very long time. I did a little research on the internet and found some interesting information about these towels.

The History Of Turkish Towels:

This blog tells me that Turkish towels were used as early as the 17th century by the Ottomans and were very popular at bathhouses. Over time, these towels become popular among women who insisted on intricate designs and patterns to be woven on their towels. In fact, they became an integral part of a Turkish bride’s ceremonial prenuptial bath.

What Makes Them Unique:

I am told that good quality Turkish towels are made from 100% natural Turkish cotton. Turkey is one of the very few countries in the world known for its superior quality cotton. They have extra long fibres and hence need fewer joins resulting in extra smooth and strong cotton threads! The best thing about these towels is that unlike terry towels, they become softer and more absorbent with use. They can hold water better than synthetic towels but are lightweight and dry quickly. These towels don’t lose their softness even after a machine wash!

Why Are They Versatile:

I don’t just use Turkish towels to dry myself after a bath. They’re so versatile; you can carry them just about anywhere! They’re lightweight and don’t occupy too much space, making them perfect for travel. I have used mine on the beach and even wrapped it like a sarong. In fact, some of my friends throw them on their favourite chair or couch for that bit of colour. You could also give them away as a wedding gift to friends and family.

Remember to buy Turkish towels made from 100% natural cotton that’s free from pesticides and other harmful chemicals. Unlike other towels, Turkish towels have a flat-weave pattern. This traps fewer allergens, making them perfect for children and people with allergies.

Maintenance Tips:

Peshtemals are zero maintenance. In fact, it is recommended that you do not use fabric softeners as the chemicals used in these softeners clogs the fibres, thereby affecting their ability to dry quickly. I regularly throw mine in the washing machine in cold water. And if you are a first time user, you don’t have to pre-wash it as well.
